What is Uterine Bleeding?

The menstrual cycle is defined as the interval between the onset of one bleeding episode and the most the onset of the next. In nomal women the cycle averages 28 appx. days, the mean duration of menstrual flow is 4-5 days, an dthe average blood loss is 35 to 80 ml. Between menarche and menopause most women experience one or more episodes of abnormal bleeding, here defined as any bleeding pattern outside the normal range of frequency, duration, or amount of blood loss.

Causes of Uterine Bleeding

It should also be remembered that Uterine Bleeding may also be the initail or principal manifestation of a generalized bleeding diathesis. The remaining causes of abnormal Uterine Bleeding can be divided into those associated with ovulatory or anovulatory cycles.

Treatment and Cure of Uterine Bleeding

The decision to evaluate a patient depends on the severity and frequency of the abnormal bleeding pattern. When vaginal bleeding occurs, it should first be determined whether the blood is derived from the uterine endometrium. Rectal, bladder, cervical, and vaginal sources of bleeding must be excluded.

Once bleeding is established to be uterine in origin, a pregnancy related disorder must be ruled out by the physical examination and appropriate laboratory tests.
