Women Pregnancy Health Issues - Preagnancy and your Health

Are you thinking about becoming pregnant? If so, think now about planning for your pregnancy. It is during those first few weeks of pregnancy, when you might not even know - that you are pregnant, that your baby's development can be most easily affected. Women with pre existing medical problems can add and do become pregnant and have successful baby deliveries. It is worth discussing that many medical problems can influence your pregnancy and that pregnancy can have an effect on your medical condition.

If possible, plan for your pregnancy at least three months before you try to conceive as this will help you to maintain a good health in pregnancy. Think about the following:

Healthy Pregnancy Checklist

  • Are you taking a folic acid supplement?
  • Is your diet healthy and varied?
  • Are you on the pill?
  • Do you smoke or drink?
  • Do you have a medical condition that could affect your pregnancy,
    such as diabetes or epilepsy?
  • Do you or your partner have a family history of inherited diseases
  • Have you has german measles or rubella.

In particular, it is best to make sure that any chronic illnesses or disorders are well controlled prior to embarking on pregnancy. It is also important to ensure that any drug therapy you are taking is appropriate for pregnancy. Some medication can be safely continued, other medication requires modification or discontinuation. As this can be a complex issue, it is essential to seek medical advice prior to pregnancy, before altering any treatment. Ill-advised or unnecessary changes in treatment may precipitate problems not only for your baby, but also for your own health.

Body Weight and preparation in Pregnancy

If you are trying to conceive and you are seriously overweight or underweight discuss this with your doctor. Extremes of weight are associated with an increased risk of problems in pregnancy. Underweight mothers are more at the risk of having problems such as a small-for-dates baby or going into premature labour.

Overweight mothers are at risk of problems such as chronic high pressure and pre-eclampsia - a serious pregnancy condition related to high blood pressure , which can lead to kidney upset and risk to the baby. In addition, both extremes of weight can be associated with fertility problems. You don't want to have to contemplate dieting when you are pregnant, so it is important to think about reducing your weight prior to get pregnant.
