Paraphilias Information

Paraphilias are primarily male disorders. In Paraphilias disorder, they are problems with controlling impulses that are related with common distressing and repetitive sexual fantasies, urges, or behaviors. Paraphilias include fantasies, behaviors, or sexual urges focusing on unusual objects, activities, or situations.

Individuals suffering from Praphilias also have sense of distress in them. Generally, they are aware of symptoms as negatively impacting them but they feel as they are unable to control them. Some of the common paraphilias include:

Causes of Paraphilias

Behaviorists suggest that paraphilias begin through a process of conditioning. Causes of paraphilias are listed below :

  • Alcoholism
  • Depression
  • Mental Retardation
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
  • Personality Disorders
  • Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
  • Schizophrenia

Symptoms of Paraphilias

Having a partner "talk dirty" may be a "turn-on" for some people, but when talking dirty is the only way that sexual arousal or satisfaction can occur, it would be considered a paraphilia. Paraphilias are magnified to the point of psychological dependence.

Paraphilias Treatment and Medication

Treatment approaches have included traditional psychoanalysis, hypnosis, and behavior therapy techniques. Cognitive-behavioral therapy: This type of therapy involves applying behavioral therapy techniques to modify the patient's sexual deviations by altering distorted thinking patterns and making patients cognizant of the irrational justifications that lead to their sexual variations. Following medication are precsribed for paraphilias -

  • Antidepressants
  • Long-acting gonadotropin-releasing hormones (GnRH, ie, medical castration)
  • Antiandrogens
  • Phenothiazine
  • Mood stabilizers
