Know Your Skin Type

Skin types can be confusing. Knowing your skin type is the first step towards a beautiful skin. It is really important for you to be able to identify your skin type. This is to enable you to look after your skin correctly.

Each human being is different. Which means, different people have
different skins which react differently to different cosmetics. So
that's probably why a particular lotion might make your sister's
skin glow, but makes yours look like an oil factory!

It is important to keep the structure of the skin in mind while
looking after your skin. The crucial parts of the skin that determine
what kind of skin you have, whether dry or not, are the upper few
layers of the epidermis. The following pages will give you an idea of
how to take care of different skin types --- oily, combination and dry
skin; fair and dark skin; mature and sensitive skin.

What is your skin type? Know your Skin Type

Allow skin type to determine your skin care regimen and you will be giving your skin the best possible attention. Your skin type is determined by how much, or how little, oil your skin produces. The amount of oil your skin produces naturally will determine the amount of oil you need in your products. But how much attention do you pay to your skin? Inspect your face closely in a magnifying mirror in the daylight. No two skins are exactly similar most have characteristics which enable them to be grouped into one of the following types - Oily skin, dry skin, sensative skin, normal skin.

Classification of different skin type

Sensitive Skin - thin, delicate, fine pores. Flushes easily, prone to broken capillaries, frequently allergic, can be rashy.

Dry Skin - feels tight, especially after cleansing; fine wrinkles, flaking, red patches.

Combination / Normal Skin - medium pores, smooth and even texture, good circulation, healthy colour, may tend toward dryness on the cheeks, may be oily in T-Zone.

Oily Skin - shiny skin, enlarged pores, prone to blackheads and blemishes, some tightness.

Aging or Sun-Damaged Skin - feels tight, visible wrinkles, slack skin tone, especially around the cheeks and jawline, leathery texture, broken capillaries.

Normal Skin

What Type of Skin Do I Have?

To recognize your specific skin type, do the following test :

  • Wash your face at night with your face wash and warm water.
  • Do not apply any cream or lotion when you go to bed.
  • The next morning, before washing your face, blot
separate tissues across your forehead, nose, cheeks and chin.
  • If there is no oily residue, you have either normal
skin or dry skin. If your skin is dry, it will feel flaky and stretched.
  • If all the tissues have an oily patch, your skin is oily.
  • If only the tissues used on the forehead, nose and chin are oily, then you have combination skin.
